Why Installing a Humidifier Is a Good Idea

Texas has a well-earned reputation of being an uncomfortably hot place during the summer. Since we live in a desert, the fact that it’s hot and dry shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. What might be surprising, however, is the effect that the environment can have on you and your home. In order to cope with the oppressive heat, most homeowners run their air conditioners non-stop all summer long. This takes care of the heat, but one of the side-effects of heavy air conditioner use is that it removes most of the humidity from the air in your home. Let’s take a look at what that lack of humidity can do, and why installing a humidifier is a good idea.

Excessive Dryness

Your body is mostly water, and relies on a certain level of moisture in the environment in order to remain healthy. If the level of moisture in the air drops to low, some of your body’s functions are affected. For example, the membranes in your nose dry out and crack; the same thing happens to your skin. These are both defenses against infection by germs, which means that you’ll be more likely to get sick.

Low humidity affects your home, as well. Wood byproducts become more brittle when they dry out. That means that your furniture, books, and even the support beams in your wall are weakened when humidity is too low.

Whole-House Humidifiers

A whole-house humidifier corrects low humidity by releasing moisture into the air. This allows you to run your air conditioner as much as you want, while still maintaining a healthy level of humidity in your home.
