Why Isn’t My AC Working Right?

ac-isnt-working-rightAny homeowner who has lived here at least a year knows that temperatures never really cool down enough to turn our AC systems off for as extended period of time as in other parts of the country. As such, you need your cooling system to operate as efficiently and effectively as it’s meant too all year long. So if it seems to be struggling right now, it’s the perfect time to schedule professional Georgetown, TX air conditioning services—before the hottest of summer temperatures come to greet us.

The type of repairs or service you need will depend on the kind of trouble you’re having with your air conditioner. For instance, if it is blowing out warm air, you could have a refrigerant leak. Or, if the system is making loud and/or unfamiliar noises, there may be a loose component. Read on to discover some of the common causes of an AC malfunction.

Leaking Refrigerant

There is a common misconception among homeowners that refrigerant should be recharged (refilled) once a year—during maintenance. While we do check your refrigerant levels during professional maintenance, it’s not normal to need your refrigerant replaced that often.

Actually, your cooling system is supplied with enough of this fluid upon installation to ideally last its entire lifecycle. So if you’ve lost refrigerant, it means you have a leak, which can be detrimental to the system overall.

Dirty Air Filter

Fortunately, this is one of the easiest air conditioning issues to resolve and prevent. The air filter that comes standard with your HVAC system is designed to protect the inside components from dirt, dust, and other debris. If the filter becomes too clogged, however, then your cooling system will struggle to provide you with the strong airflow you’re used to.

This air filter can and should be changed by the homeowner, at least once every 3 months during periods of use. And if you have significant contaminants wafting through your indoor air—like pet dander or cigarette smoke—then it should be changed once a month.

Aging

No air conditioner can last forever, no matter how well it’s cared for or how high the efficiency. Air conditioners accumulate natural wear and tear over the years. Repairs will only last so long before another service call is needed. If your cooling system is over 10 years old and you’ve found yourself scheduling repairs every few months, it could very well be time for an AC upgrade.

Help Your Cooling System Function Well

The above-mentioned factors are just a few of the potential causes of cooling system trouble. To ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of your AC system over its lifespan, it’s important to schedule regular maintenance (once a year—twice if you use a heat pump), and take appropriate steps to ensure the system’s efficiency, such as:

  • Making sure your thermostat is functional and that it is correctly reading the temperature of your home.
  • Upgrading your thermostat from a manual slider.
  • Having your ducts inspected and sealed to make sure no conditioned air is escaping into unoccupied areas.
  • Improving your home’s insulation to reduce heat gain from the outdoors.
  • Limiting the use of heat-producing appliances during the hottest points of the day.
